It recently donned on me that I am a fully fledged adult. It took a while I know, but it was a real lightbulb moment.
I used to think that it would be great to be in charge of my own life and not have to listen to what my mum or any other grown up would tell me. The truth is, it’s a lot more difficult than I ever imagined and I’ve compiled a list of things that make it so.
MONEY DOESN’T GROW ON TREES!!!
This was quite possibly the worst realisation I had to come to terms with as I got older. I never believed (per se) that money came from trees, but I didn’t think it was that difficult to earn it. I don’t know where I thought my mum got it from, but I’ll be honest and say I used to think that Credit Cards were just cards you got as an adult that had endless amounts of money on them.
How disappointing to find out this wasn’t in fact the case… AT ALL!!!
YOU’RE THE EMERGENCY CONTACT!!!
When I was a little girl, no matter what went wrong in my life whether that was an injury or boy troubles, my mum was my first point of contact. She was my emergency contact for EVERYTHING in life and don’t get me wrong, I’ll never stop needing my mum. However… I am now the person responsible for whatever goes wrong in my life. I am the person in charge of putting things rights and having an “mature” perspective on things.
It’s not as easy as my mum made it look!
THERE ARE NO SICK DAYS!!!
This is a hard one to stomach… But when you’re an adult, and especially a mum, you can’t call in sick from life. Housework still needs done. Kids still need washed and fed and generally looked after. So when you’re feeling like you’re at death’s door and honestly don’t know if you have long left to live, you still have to pay the bills, look after the kids and be a functioning adult. It’s awful. There should be some sort of government funded program whereby adults/ mums can call a hotline when they’re sick and a team of cleaners, chefs, and babysitters come to your home and take over your life while you get better. WHERE IS THIS SERVICE???
YOU HEAR YOUR MOTHER’S VOICE WHEN YOU SPEAK!
It really is the strangest phenomenon, but as you get older and start adulting, you begin to speak in the same way as your mum once spoke to you. Phrases like “do you think I’m made of money” (how appropriate given what I’ve said above) or “when I was your age we used to make our own entertainment”. I cringe every time I do it, because I remember rolling my eyes when my mum said these things to me. Alas, it is inevitable. I just have to accept that I am slowly turning into my mother… Which if I’m honest isn’t a bad thing at all.
THE FRIDGE IS FULL, WHY ARE WE ORDERING OUT???
When I was younger, there was nothing better than having a takeaway for dinner. Not only because my mums cooking was questionable at the best of times, but because having a takeaway was always somehow super exciting. However… being a fully fledged adult means making the often tough decision of cooking at home instead of ordering delicious and fuss-free takeaways. It’s a difficult concept that I’m still working on prioritising in my life, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that the majority of money that comes into our household is used to pay for takeout food. I’d say at least 75% of it in fact.Tags: ADULT, ADULTING, GROWNUP, MATURE, RESPONSIBLE, SARCASTIC
